Singing has been a part of my life since I was a small child and always very much a part of our family.
As a child I was fascinated with group singing such as trios and quartets we heard when our family attended revival services and camp meetings. Being small in stature, my parents always made sure that I could “see” the group from where we were sitting.
My fascination and love of singing continued as I participated in our local church music program and in the early ‘60’s, I attended an all-night sing in Massey Hall, Toronto. I was hooked. Our family continued to attend the all-night sings in Massey Hall where we bought albums and sheet music and built a music library of gospel music in our home.
In March of 1967, we formalized our family music by starting a trio made up of my brother Dennis Gunter, now of “Reunion”, and my husband Reed Sellwood and myself. We continued singing as a trio, and sometimes a quartet until The Sellwoods wound down on December 31, 1997. During the duration of The Sellwoods, our music accompaniment was all live using a full band from the mid seventies onward. More than fifty singers and musicians came through our organization.
Until joining Triumphant Sound in July of 2009, I have been singing with some regional groups and also musically involved in our local church.
I have always been intrigued by the science of singing and the voice in general. The magic of two or three or more voices singing at the same time and sounding as one still fascinates me. In the early sixties, I attended The Stamps School of Music in Toronto, which was an intense time of study for a duration of two weeks. Still intrigued by the science of vocals, I studied Royal Conservatory vocals for two years and gave serious consideration to attending the Juilliard School of Music in New York city but never mailed that application. I still challenge myself each time I sing to be the best I can be.
When I was eighteen years of age, I had a miraculous encounter with the Lord and from that time forward, the Holy Spirit and my singing meshed in my life making singing Christian music my comfort zone and happiness in life. Family generations before me ministered in word and music. My husband says “she’s made to sing”.
The Holy Spirit + my singing voice = Ministry. An audience excites me and I love to communicate God’s love, peace and encouragement whenever I sing.
This is who I am…………..Kathleen (Kathy) Sellwood.
